World news is the term used for international news in the media. It is usually a subfield of journalism and covers information sent from abroad by correspondents or, in modern times, through distance communication technologies like telephone or the Internet. World news may also refer to news events of a global nature, such as wars or summits.
The bulk of world news is prepared by major news agencies, which produce hard news stories and feature articles for sale to news organizations such as newspapers, magazines and radio or television broadcasters. They distribute this news through wire services, which originally used telegraphy and now frequently use the Internet. Individuals, corporations and intelligence agencies may also subscribe to these news services.
A foreign correspondent is a full-time reporter stationed in a foreign city and responsible for covering a region, country or continent. These reporters often collect material for their stories from local government officials, members of the community and the local media as well as events they witness firsthand. They also file stories regularly to their news editor at their home newspaper.
